FebFest finale

Three final events will occur on Saturday, Feb. 28, to conclude Febest, the month-long celebration of Freeport arts and culture. At 2 p.m., the Fusion Dance Academy will offer demonstrations and presentations by master teachers and performance teams. The academy is located at 1456 US Route 1. Cabin fever reliever

The South Freeport Congregational Church will host a barbecue buffet and bingo night, Saturday, March 7, starting at 5 p.m., at 98 South Freeport Road. Bingo will start at 7 p.m. The menu will include ribs, pulled pork, chicken, sides, two complimentary drinks and dessert. Child care is provided on site with pizza and a movie. Free film at library

Each month this spring, Freeport Community Library will present free films in the Community Meeting Room. Films range from familiar classics to documentaries, new releases and lesser-known movies.

On Thursday, March 5, at 1 p.m., “The Secret of Roan Inish” will be shown. This 1994 independent film was written and directed by John Sayles. Filmed in Ireland, it is based on the folktales of the selkies – seals that can shed their skins to become human. The story is about Fiona, a young girl who is sent to live with her grandparents near the island of Roan Inish on the west coast of Ireland. It is a family legend that her younger brother was swept away in infancy and raised by a selkie.

Tea tasting March 1

Allagash author to speak March 2

Maine author Tim Caverly is scheduled to speak at Freeport High School Library, 30 Holbrook St., Freeport on Monday, March 2, from 6-8 p.m.

Caverly has published five books about the North Woods and the Allagash River. He is currently offering programming about his books in schools throughout New England to promote literacy and to discuss his “Allagash Tails” collection. As a park ranger with Maine’s Department of Conservation for 32 years, he spent 18 years as ranger supervisor of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The cost is $25.

Author Lea Wait in town March 10

Lea Wait, Agatha Award finalist for her “Shadows Antique Print Mystery Series,” will talk at Freeport Community Library on Tuesday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m.

Wait combines homicide and antiques in “Shadows of a Maine Christmas,” book 7 in that series, released last September. Her new “Mainely Needlepoint” series made its debut January with the release of “Twisted Threads,” which features Angie Curtis, an unlikely heroine who runs a custom needlepoint business in Haven Harbor, Maine.

In addition to her two mystery series, Wait will share from “Uncertain Glory,” her latest historical fiction book for young adults, which is based on a real boy who owned and ran Wiscasset’s newspaper at the beginning of the Civil War and went on to become a major figure in Maine journalism.

Wait, a fourth-generation antiques dealer, has been writing mysteries for grownups and historical fiction set in Maine for young people since she left corporate America in 1998 and moved to Maine. To learn more about her, see www.leawait.com.

Rotary offering scholarships

The Freeport Rotary Club is offering three scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are residents of Freeport, Pownal or Durham and plan to go on to an academic college, university program or technical college. There are two Academic Scholarships for $2,000 each and one Technical Scholarship for $1,000.

Eligibility guidelines include outstanding community service, scholastic performance and financial need. The application deadline is May 1. A scholarship application can be obtained from the guidance offices at Freeport High School, Pine Tree Academy, North Yarmouth Academy, Vocational Region 10 in Brunswick, Waynflete School, Cheverus High School, Merriconeag Waldolf School, Greely High School, McAuley High School, Baxter Academy or online at www.freeport-rotary.org. Chocolate Factory tours are back

Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate Factory, 174 Lower Main St., will be open for tours on Feb. 28, at 11 and 11:45 a.m., and 12:30 and 1:15 p.m. Visitors are invited to come to the factory and hear about Wilbur’s history, learn a little about chocolate making and eat samples while taking the hands-on tour. Cost is $4.50 per person and includes samples and a treat to make. No reservations are needed.

Armchair Travel at the library

On the first four Mondays in March, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Freeport Community Library will present its Armchair Travel series, in which local residents share their recent travels abroad with slide presentations and personal memories of trip highlights. Each presentation is about an hour, including an opportunity to ask questions. Tea and coffee are served, as well. The travel itinerary includes:

Brochure contest ends Friday

RSU 5 Recreation & Community Education is now accepting cover photo entries for the 2015 Spring/Summer Brochure. The photo will be used as the front cover for the 2015 Spring/Summer Brochure, mailed to over 6,000 households in the district. The deadline to submit a photo is Friday, Feb. 27. Even with the snow, there was a good turnout for the Masons’ roast pork dinner, Feb. 21 at the Masonic Lodge on Mallet Drive. The menu featured roast pork, mashed potatoes, vegetables, homemade biscuits, dessert and beverage.
