BIDDEFORD — Sister Monique Gobeil, formerly known as Sr. St. Monique of the Passion, died at St. Joseph Convent on Feb. 19, 2015 at the age of 90.
Sr. Monique was born in Ste-Julie, Lotbiniére on Dec. 2, l924, to Léon Gobeil and Marie-Anne Paré Gobeil.
Sister Monique was the ninth child in a family of 10 children. She received her education in Ste-Julie. Later, she enrolled in American Correspondence School and obtained her high school equivalency diploma.
On Aug. 25, 1941, Sr. Monique entered the Congregation of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, in Quebec, Canada.
In 1950, Sr. Monique was transferred to the United States, where she stayed for her entire religious life. Sister worked at different occupations during her lifetime ”“ housekeeping, nursing, as C.N.A at Webber Hospital, at parish ministry in Biddeford and Grand Isle, and sewing in one of the Biddeford mills.
Sister Monique never refused to help others in need if she possibly could be of assistance. She spent more than 10 years in parish ministry to the home-bound in Madawaska, where she was a personal care attendant for the elderly.
For health reasons, sister was transferred to St. Joseph Convent, Biddeford, in 2008.
She is survived by: one sister, Madeleine Gobeil Paris, who resides in Canada; a close nephew, Jean Guy Gobeil; and several nephews and nieces who reside in Quebec.
Visiting hours will be at St. Joseph Convent, 409 Pool St., Biddeford, on Monday, Feb. 23 from 6-8 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Convent, Biddeford, on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. The burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Biddeford.
