AUGUSTA — Gilley Davis-Oakes scored 15 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter, and eighth-seeded Vinalhaven erased a 14-point deficit to upset top-seeded Pine Tree Academy 45-43 in a Western Class D girls’ basketball quarterfinal Tuesday at the Augusta Civic Center.
Vinalhaven (10-10) trailed 40-26 entering the fourth quarter but climbed back into the game with an 11-0 run, including nine points from Davis-Oakes. Pine Tree’s only field goal of the fourth quarter, by Allison Verrill, made it 42-37, but Vinalhaven surged ahead on baskets by Davis-Oakes and Paige Dennison and two free throws by Davis-Oakes.
After Alex Goodman hit 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game with 1:05 left, Davis-Oakes was fouled and made both free throws with 39 seconds remaining.
Goodman led Pine Tree with 19 points and Verrill finished with 14. Kim Emerson, a 6-foot-2 senior center, was in foul trouble for much of the game and was held to four points before fouling out.
Dennison scored 13 points for Vinalhaven, which will face fourth-seeded Richmond in the semifinals on Thursday.
