The gentleman Capers took to the pool against 23 other teams from around the state at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday, and when they climbed out again, they were Class B Champions.

Cape hashed 275.5 points on the day, grabbing first place as a team by a 34.5-point margin over No. 2 Morse. Mount Desert Island finished third at 229.5, Ellsworth fourth (215) and Camden Hills fifth (197). Cape scored in every single event except diving.

Cape head coach Ben Raymond had plenty of praise for his squad.

“All the boys swam well,” he said. “Harry Homans won the 200 IM and 500 Free. In the 500, he also broke a school record. And he was part of the 200 Medley Relay team that set a school record. The other three boys were Reese McFarlane, Kyle Long and RJ Sarka.”

Homans – just a freshman – completed the 500 Free in 4:48.12. He and his 200 Medley Relay cohorts finished in 1:42.28.

Raymond also highlighted Elliot McGinn’s performance in the 100 Fly – McGinn was seeded in the middle 20s, but finished 13th; Connor Thoreck’s in the 50 Free – seeded 30th, Thoreck ultimately placed 15th; and Owen Thoreck’s in the 50 Free as well (20th seed, 13th-place finish).

Similarly, McFarlane, Tommy Brett and Sam Loring all cracked the top nine in the 100 Breast, and Loring, Alex Mukai and Stephen Bennet all scored in the 200 Free.

“Our boys worked hard all season in the pool and in the weight room,” Raymond said. “They love to race and compete and that showed [at States].”
