If it were not so sad, Tom Bell’s Jan. 31 article, “City dreams of a bigger train station,” would be laughable.

The city of Portland had a gorgeous train station. It was called Union Station, at the corner of Congress and St. John streets. There are some of us who actually shed tears as it was demolished – for what? In the vernacular of today, it is called “progress”!

My lovely picture of the station, taken in 1961 from the top of the Inn at St. John, reminds me. It’s just a memory, sad though it may be.
