Savory Maine Restaurant is opening its 2015 season with the photography of Carl Root. The exhibit will run from Feb. 12 to March 24.
On display will be works titled “Pianos – Up Close” at the Parilla Performing Arts Center in Rockville, MD; “Fire and Water” at the Black Rock Center for the Performing Arts in Germantown, Maryland; and “Reflections in Architecture” at the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery in Rockville, Maryland. Root was a member of the Art League in Alexandria, VA where several of his prints won awards, including best of show for “OZ #1.” A complete list of shows and awards can be found at his website, www.rhythmimages.com.
Images from the “Pianos – Up Close” series were shot at , “performance venues in the Washington D.C. metro area, where Carl plied his trade as a piano technician for 42 years. Some of the images focused on pianos that exhibited unusual features either intrinsic to the piano or resulting from gradual decay after many years of use and exposure. Others emphasized unusual natural light from clerestory or stained glass windows.
The inspiration for “Fire and Water” arose out of Carl’s interest in the striking chemical effects that resulted from the process of burning damaged cars and then extinguishing them – a routine part of the all-day sessions at a firefighters training facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Carl’s approach to photography is as much auditory as visual. The arrangements of shapes and patterns in his compositions are a reflection of his interest in the polyrhythms of jazz and soul music. He sings and plays keyboard professionally and is enjoying his new surroundings in Maine playing music, tuning pianos, and making photographs of the midcoast landscape.
An opening reception for Root will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20. Savory Maine will provide sweet and savory finger foods. Beer and wine will be available to purchase. The public is invited to this event.
Savory Maine is located at 11 Water St. and is open five days a week, serving lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Monday. The restaurant sources most of its food from Maine, and nearly all of it is organically grown, wild harvested or grass fed.
