BOWDOINHAM
The annual Ice & Smelt Festival organized by the Merrymeeting Arts Center will take place in Bowdoinham next Saturday from 1-6 p.m. at 9 Main St. (grey building with red roof down by the river).
Once again a highlight of the afternoon will be a Best Beard Contest cosponsored with the Maine Facial Hair Club. The Best Beard Contest will be from 3-4 p.m.
From 1-3 p.m. there will be a variety of activities for all ages — decorate a smelt and build a model smelt shack with legos and art materials. Sub Zero Ice Carving will be doing large scale ice sculpture at the gazebo and there will be snow sculpture and snowball distance throwing outside as well (weather permitting). There will be art materials available to create your own whimsical beard (for those not already sporting facial hair). So come create the beard of your dreams!
The Best Beard contest will begin at 3 p.m. with club president Steve Trask MCing. There will be many categories for competition for artistic hirsute competitors and for the entertainment of an enthusiastic audience. This event will be held in the “big back” room at the art center at 9 Main Street.
After the Best Beard Contest, everyone can enjoy the Soup & Bread Supper (unlimited access is $5 apiece with children under 5 free, and $15 with your own bowl by Pottery Project artists). The Festival will end once again with the launching of beautiful sky lanterns ($10 apiece to buy and launch your own).
Come celebrate our beautiful ice and smelt season!
Sunday, Feb. 8 is the snow date.
