One person is recovering from a gunshot wound and two people are in jail after a fight Monday night on Mount Vernon Avenue.
Augusta police Lt. Christopher Massey said one man was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his arm. The man, whose name police did not disclose because the investigation is ongoing, was treated at the hospital and released, Massey said.
Two men have been arrested during the investigation, Massey said. Anthony George Perry, 50, of Augusta was arrested on a warrant. Nathan S. Bernheisel, 35, of Gardiner was arrested on warrants and new charges of failure to provide correct name, address or date of birth and two counts of unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs.
Both were held Tuesday in the Kennebec County jail.
Massey said additional charges are possible.
Police were sent to the apartment building at 94 Mount Vernon Ave. around 8:45 p.m. Monday in response to a report of two people fighting. Moments later, there was a report of gunshots, Massey said.
When officers arrived, they found blood outside the building, Massey said. Officers also found a handgun in the area. Police quickly found the bleeding man, who had been shot in the arm.
Police interviewed several witnesses, but the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still unclear.
“We’re still trying to piece it all together,” Massey said. “Cooperation has been minimal.”
Massey said the shooting was not a random act.
“It appears that all the parties involved know each other,” he said. “The motivation behind this appears to be drug-related.”
