Variety is the hallmark of a benefit concert on Saturday, January 10 by Merry Meeting Singers. The concert will be held at the new Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick beginning at 7:30 pm.
Merry Meeting Singers began six years ago as a group of local singers interested in performing the classical, folk and modern choral repertoire. Under the direction of Larry Lemmel, MMS has performed at various Mid Coast Maine events including Longfellow Days, the annual Twelfth Night Revels, and benefit concerts.
“Winter Dreams” is the theme of the choir’s January 10 concert. Music will include two prayers by Maurice Duruflé and four selections from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein. Also on the program will be musical settings of two wellknown Robert Frost poems, “Choose Something like a Star” and “The Road Not Taken.”
A special feature of the program will be five songs by American composer Charles Ives, including “In Flanders Fields,” one of the most famous poems of World War I. Baritone Brad Mitchell will perform the songs.
The Director of Merry Meeting Singers is Larry Lemmel, a graduate of Westminster Choir College and the Yale School of Music. The accompanist is Brunswick pianist Janet Davis.
Merry Meeting Singers are sopranos Tammis Donovan and Jane Knox; altos Kate Gray and Anne Witty, tenors Richard Brautigam and Brad Mitchell; and basses David Roundy and Dan Warren.
Adult tickets are $10 at the door. All proceeds of the concert will benefit the Building Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick.
