He grew up in the Woolwich area and graduated from Morse High School. Wayne had been a farmer and livestock dealer for many years. He loved his animals, especially his steer and oxen. He dealt with all forms of farming, livestock and fowl. He loved to attend the Maine Agricultural Fairs, both showing and pulling cattle, participating in Bath Heritage Days Parade and the local livestock auctions. He was a longtime member of the Maine Draft Horse and Ox Association, The Maine State Fair Association, a licensed pulling superintendent, and also a past master and member of the Woolwich Grange.
In his younger years, he helped his family milk cows and sell butter to local businesses. He was instrumental in running the family farm when his father took ill. He also ran a school bus for Woolwich and worked at Bath Iron Works for a few years.
Wayne was predeceased by both Charlotte and Chester Leeman.
Surviving are his beloved cousins, Margaret Hodgdon of Wiscasset, Tiffany Leeman of Bath, Peter Waltz of New Hampshire, Vanessa Waltz of New Mexico, Thomas Waltz of Florida, Daniel Waltz of New Hampshire, Jeremy Waltz of New Hampshire, Mary King of Woolwich and Esther Hauck of Woolwich; and close friends Harold McMannus of Topsham, longtime neighbor Gerry Galuza, Curtis and Linda Prime of Augusta, Julie Giles of Steep Falls, Diana Garnett of Woolwich and Johanna Kaherl of Winthrop.
There will be a celebration of life held at the Topsham Grange, 47 Pleasant St., from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Woolwich in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maine State Grange, 146 State St., Augusta, ME 04330. Put “Agricultural Scholarship Fund in memory of Wayne Leeman” in the memo.
