As you can imagine, we get many news items each week, some of which are of interest to local senior citizens. At this time of the year, we also are notified of annual awards and lists of the most popular songs, movies, plays and books of the past year. One recent notice is sure to be of interest to seniors who continue to be active in a variety of sports.

Maine Senior Games has announced a new Hall of Fame to honor award winning Maine athletes 50 and older. Selected athletes will be inducted into the Inaugural Hall of Fame at the

Maine Senior Games annual “Celebration of Athletes” in May 2015.

A Hall of Fame candidate must be a Maine resident, competed in a minimum of five Maine Senior Games and two National Senior Games, and won a gold, silver, or bronze medal at the National Senior Games. All nominees will be judged on their individual/team accomplishments and significant contributions to the Maine Senior Games.

Nominations are now being accepted by the Maine Senior Games Nominating Committee. The deadline is March 1, 2015. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins has a free monthly newsletter called Senior Source, which provides updates about legislation and other issues facing seniors in Maine and through the nation. She is the ranking member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging. To receive a copy, contact Senior_Source@collins.senate.gov and a copy will be sent to you electronically. There are many interesting items in the ones we have read.

In Windham, the public library has announced its updated service to seniors – delivery of books and movies on a regular monthly basis. Residents of Little Falls Landing, Ledgewood Manor, Unity Gardens and New Marblehead Manor will benefit from this. Senior housing deliveries begin in January. Starting Jan. 6, Windham Public Library will deliver an assortment of books, (both regular print and large print) and movies, on the first Tuesday of each month. They anticipate delivery time in the morning but depending on travel time and delivery complications, timing is subject to adjusting.
