For 26 years, he taught seventh grade science at Wiscasset Middle School. And as he use to claim, at one point, he held the record for being the oldest life guard and the one with the most years (12) life guarding at Popham and Reid. He loved his years at Quaker Point and the “camp.”
Stoney’s passions defined his life. He loved learning. His father once asked what he thought Stoney would be at 30. His reply, “a student.” In reality, that is what he was all his life. He loved reading anything and everything — from history on the kings of England, to Shakespeare, to James Joyce, to cooking and finally in the last 10 years to all he could find on Japanese history, art and culture. His interests were far-reaching and eclectic. However, his greatest passion was for his wife. She was the center of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Frankie, a brother Bill, a daughter Kim and grandson Joe, a niece Jessie, a nephew Jeremiah, his sisterin law Gail and brother-in-law Trec and a goddaughter Grace. His friends include those from his class at Morse, from his parents’ friends and their children, from life guarding, from teaching in Wiscasset, from his many summers in Oxford, England, and finally friends from Greely High School (where his wife taught).
He had a quote that he either had coined or had read: “Rich is not wanting more than you have. I am the richest man alive.” Je ne regrette rien.
