The State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested a Gorham man Friday morning on child pornography charges.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, Micah Maurio, 28, was charged with dissemination of sexually explicit material of someone under the age of 12. He was arrested at his apartment at 132 Gray Road and taken to the Cumberland County Jail.

In a press statement issued Friday afternoon, Christopher Quint, executive director of USM’s Office of Public Affairs, said “Micah Maurio has been suspended, without pay, pending a decision on his continued employment with the University of Southern Maine.”

An initial review of his personal computer showed hundreds of images of child pornography. His computer was seized and will be further analyzed by state police. None of the children depicted are believed to be from Maine, McCausland said.

Maurio is a musician and a part-time faculty member at the University of Southern Maine, lecturing on music on the Gorham campus, McCausland said. He has been under investigation by the computer crimes unit since October following a tip. Gorham police also assisted in the arrest, which took place at 10:30 a.m. Maurio offered no resistance.
