Girls Basketball

Coach: Mike Giordano

Last year’s record: 7-11

Key players: Ashley Briggs, Bailey Adams, Brooke Malone, Sam Sparda, Sophie Glidden, Natalie Taylor

Key games: Thornton, South Portland, Deering

Outlook: The Red Storm finished below .500 last year, but slid into the playoffs in the nine seed. Naturally, they look to repeat, and improve, on that performance. Giordano’s hope is to advance at least to the semis, adding “from there, it’s anyone’s tournament!”

Cheering

Coaches: Leah Marsanskis (head), Shelby Dahms (asst.)

Last year’s record: Seventh at States

Key athletes: Emma Greenberg, Delaney Pitts, Gretchen Stearns

Key meets: SMAAs, Regionals, States

Outlook: The Storm look to improve on last year’s seventh place finish, but will have to do so with a younger squad overall. Still, as Marsanskis says, “They have plenty of talent to finish stronger in 2015.”

Boys Hockey

Coach: Norm Gagne

Last year’s record: 17-6-1

Key players: Ben Bragg (sr., G); Kevin Smith (sr., D); Sean McGovern (sr., F); Braeden Kane (sr., F); Matt Caron (jr., F); Cam Nigro (jr, F); Jack Callahan (jr., D); Sean McDonald (jr., D); Colin Hayward (jr., F)

Key games: Falmouth, Thornton, Biddeford, Cheverus

Outlook: “We lost a big part of our scoring to graduation,” says Gagne, “but we have a great young group of talented underclassmen.” Many Storm sophomores will see ice time this season, and while they’ll bring plenty of skill with them, they’ll also need to improve constantly to keep pace with elder competition. Gagne nevertheless looks to make some noise in the tournament – and his teams usually do.

Girls Hockey

Coach: Caitlin Cashman

Last year’s record: 21-0, Class A State Champions

Key players: Kristen Murray, Lily Nygren, Sami Shoebottom, Meghan Doak

Key games: Lewiston, Leavitt/Edward Little, Falmouth, Greely

Outlook: Scarborough are very young this year, with 15 underclassmen, including 10 freshmen – (“although we’re very fortunate to have such a huge class!” says Cashman) – and just three seniors and a smattering of juniors. That shakeup in their roster means the Storm want to break with last year’s legacy: “We want to make it about this season,” says Cashman, “take each game shift by shift and period by period. And it’s always team first.” The team’s speed is one strength. “We have lots of speed,” Cashman says, “and want to use it to exhaust our opponents.” To that end, conditioning is among her primary aims for the season, as well as discipline within the team’s systems. She suspects some opponents may feel dismissive toward her young squad, but is at peace with that, even enjoys it: “To be the underdog is always much more fun, and the success we may achieve will be that much sweeter. This team has a work ethic I haven’t experienced in a long time…They have fantastic attitudes, and as cheesy as it sounds, attitude truly is everything in athletics.”

Alpine Skiing

Coaches: David Mills, Tim Atwood

Last year’s record: Second in SMAA

Key athletes: Sarah Hassler, Andrew Mills, Nat Gerhke, Marc Guerette

Outlook: The Storm are young on the slopes this year, but their returners are talented. Andrew Mills took second in both slalom and giant slalom at last year’s SMAA Finals, and Nat Gerhke rejoins the team after a year at Gould Academy. Hassler, alongside Sophia Zidow, will lead the girls ably. Likewise, the squad’s incoming freshmen show great promise. “Scarborough’s goal is to be on top of the SMAA,” Mills says.

Swimming

Coach: Eric French (fifth year)

Last year’s record: Boys 5-3, third at Southwesterns, 11th at States; girls 1-7, eighth at Southwesterns, 14th at States

Key athletes: Kyle Ankermann (jr), Edie Frederick (so.), Sam Greenberg (fr.), Hannah Griffin (fr.)

Outlook: “It should be interesting,” French says. “This team is still young, but has added some great swimmers. Some return from a year off, others are from a strong freshman class.” Graduation did a number on the boys squad, French notes, but he thinks they “should still be in the mix. They have that underdog fight in them.” Also to the team’s advantage is a sizable roster, 55 swimmers. “We feel Scarborough swimming is on a rise again,” French says, “late night practices and all. They have that Red Storm pride.”

Boys Indoor Track

Coach: Derek Veilleux

Last year’s record: Undefeated, Class A State Champions

Key athletes: Jerry Kenney (sr.), Maxim Doiron (sr.), Lucas Foerster (sr.), Will Fowler (sr.), Colin Jones (sr.), Edward James (sr.), Hugh McSorley (sr.), Jacob Bloom (sr.), Jacob Terry (sr.), Griffin Madden (jr.), Colin Tardiff (jr.), Sam Rusak (so.)

Key meets: SMAAs, States

Outlook: The Storm are well-positioned in 2014-2015. They return an experienced roster, including a dozen scorers from last year’s States, and that experience will surely gird the team through their regular schedule and into the Championship season. Veilleux is likewise excited about his 38 underclassmen, whom he calls talented and from whom he expects substantive contributions. “If we stay healthy, we should have a very strong winter,” Veilleux says.

Girls Indoor Track

Coach: Ron Kelly

Key athletes: Aly Atherton, Marisa Carbone, Jenna Douglas, Kayla Griffis, Emma Koukos, Gaby Panagakos, Sarah Rinaldi, Sydney Rusak, Ellen Shaw, Laura Volan

Last year’s record: Second at Southwesterns, Eighth at States

Outlook: Kelly expects to be very competitive at Southwesterns, and looks to improve upon last year’s eighth-place finish at States. He calls his team young, but also speaks optimistically of his high jump, a “strong event,” and his distance runners, “greatly improved.”
