A Portland man has been arrested following a hit-and-run in South Portland on Wednesday evening.

At about 7 p.m., the South Portland Police Department received a call about a man in the roadway at the intersection of Broadway and Harriet Street. When officers arrived, they found a male lying in the roadway unconscious with life-threatening injuries.

It was obvious to the responding officers that the victim had been struck by a motor vehicle due to the evidence at the scene, said South Portland police Sgt. Steve Webster. The victim, whose name is not being released at this time, was transported to the Maine Medical Center.

At about 9:15 p.m., or two hours after the initial call, Webster said, a subject called the police department to report that he was the person who struck the victim with his vehicle on Broadway. Brett Catruch, 27, was interviewed and subsequently arrested.

Catruch was charged with class C leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, class D operating under the influence, and violating conditions of release. He is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail pending his arraignment Friday.
