He was born in Johnstown, Pa., Sept. 1, 1936, the son of M. Albert and Eleanor Fowler Evans. He graduated valedictorian in the class of 1954 from Mercersburg Academy, in Mercersburg, Pa., graduated cum laude from Harvard College in 1958 and received his doctorate of medicine from Harvard Medical School in 1962.
Dr. Evans did his internship and medical residency training at Dartmouth Medical School and was chief medical resident, graduating from his residency program in internal medicine in 1968.
He served two years in the U.S. Navy as assistant to the Attending Physician to Congress in 1962-1963 and chief of the medical department at the Main Navy Dispensary in Washington, D.C. 1963-1964.
He practice internal medicine in Brunswick at the former Regional Memorial Hospital and Parkview Memorial Hospital, presently Mid Coast Hospital and Parkview Adventist Medical Center.
Dr. Evans initiated, supervised and participated in the cardiac fitness program, “Running Start” for 15 years.
He was a former president of Regional Memorial Hospital Medical Staff for two years, chief of medicine for 11 years and director of the Intensive Care Unit from it’s inception for 20 years. At Parkview, he was the first physician medical director for the Central and Western Maine Regional Physician Hospital Organization.
In 2001, Dr. Evans moved his office to his home and practiced there until retiring in 2003 after 35 years of serving the Brunswick area as a physician.
In his words, I worked to “Help make my patients have as long a happy life as possible.” He enjoyed skiing, sailing and horseback riding.
In addition to his wife, Betty Sharp Evans, whom he married in March 1986, he is survived his children: Mark and his wife Lisa of Freeport, Rebecca Taber and her husband Hank of Tenants Harbor, Jennifer Evans and her husband Sean Boyle of Massachusetts; stepchildren, Karen Pelletier and her husband Bernard of Brunswick, Kathy Plourde and her husband Ken of Bowdoinham, Kim Johnson and her husband Kenneth of West Bath, James Sharp Jr. of Bath, and Kelly Malkoch and her husband George of Brunswick; three brothers, James Evans of Arlington, Ill., Bruce Evans of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Geoffrey Evans, PhD, of Brunswick; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his first wife, Susan Appleton Jowett.
Friends are invited to visit from 4-6 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Interment will be in Bay View Cemetery, Bowdoinham, in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011.
