The Capers have long had a proud athletic tradition, and this fall showed them in fine form. Before the winter season gets going full-tilt, let’s take a moment to review Cape’s recent performances.
Football finished 6-3. Aaron Filieo’s boys looked impressive in a tough division dominated by Leavitt and Spruce Mountain. The Capers upset Leavitt by just one point, but fell big in their contest with Spruce, and entered the postseason ranked fourth. There, they succumbed narrowly in the quarterfinals to No. 5 Yarmouth, who they’d overcome in the regular season on a spectacular, last-second field goal by Ben Ekedahl.
Field hockey finished just ahead of the middle of the pack, entering the postseason ranked fifth. Kennebunk edged them from the bracketing in the quarterfinals, though, a 2-1 final.
Tim Desmarais’s golfers trampled undefeated through the regular season, and anchored by Reese McFarlane’s astounding, five-under-par performance, took second to Camden Hills at Team States. A week later, McFarlane captured second at Individual States.
The cross country squad turned in impressive finishes as well: Both the boys and the girls teams placed third at Regionals, where Mitchell Morris finished first individually by almost 26 seconds over his nearest competitor. At States, both lineups again placed third, and Morris again took first among all boys, making him the Class B crown winner.
The boys soccer team compiled a 9-5-2 record. They entered the postseason ranked fourth in B West, good enough for a bye through the prelims; they met York in the quarters, and emerged victorious 2-1, but fell to rivals Greely in the semis, 1-0.
The No. 3 girls soccer team built to 12-4-1. After trumping Morse 6-1 in the quarters then slipping past Yarmouth 1-0 in the semis, they battled to a 2-1 win on penalty kicks over Greely in the Regional Final. The hard-fought triumph earned them a rematch of last year’s States bout with Waterville. The Capers took the 2013 title, but weren’t so lucky this season, falling 1-0 in OT.
Last, but not least, the volleyball team, who began the postseason ranked fifth, then fought tenaciously through the bracketing, more than one coming from two sets down to claim victory. They did just that in the State match with reigning queens of the court Falmouth, who the Capers unseated to take home the gold ball.
Cape Elizabeth’s Owen Thoreck shuttles the ball upfield in the team’s season-opener at Freeport, back in September.
Cape senior Kirsten Rudburg cleats the ball away on the attack in Nov. 8’s Class B State Final with Waterville at Deering.
