WESTBROOK – The Animal House, a midcoast-based pet store offering all-natural and locally made products, is opening a second location in Westbrook Saturday, Nov. 15.

The store will open this weekend in the Westbrook Crossing plaza off Main Street, across from Kohl’s and next to U.S. Cellular.

Operating in Damariscotta since 2005, the store sells natural pet foods, supplements, remedies for common pet ailments, and provides free nutritional consultations.

In a press release this week, Animal House owner Aubrey Martin said the company philosophy has remained the same for the past decade.

“We don’t carry any food or treats from China. None of our food lines contain wheat, corn, soy, byproducts, artificial colorings or preservatives. We don’t sell rawhide, or things that aren’t digestible or chemicals of any kind. You’d be surprised how many products still meet that criteria,” she said.

Animal House carries many products made in New England, which include food items, as well as toys and outdoor gear. The company also specializes in raw food diets for dogs and cats, offering frozen, freeze-dried, dehydrated and air-dried food.

Since 2005, The Animal House has won numerous regional awards including “Pet Retailer of the Year” from Pet Product News, “Business Enhancement” from the Damariscotta Region Chamber of Commerce, and “Best of the Best” from Down East Magazine. According to the release, the store was also selected as a finalist in the Maine Family Business Awards this year.

Each year, the business hosts multiple adoption events and bimonthly adoption clinics, partnering with regional animal shelters. The Animal House in Westbrook will partner with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, also based in Westbrook, for a cat adoption program.

From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, the company will hand out free samples and coupons for freeze-dried diets and treats. In the release, Martin said the company is already excited to be a part of the Westbrook community, and will host an official grand opening sometime this spring.

“We have been so thrilled with the reception we have had so far from Westbrook and from those from surrounding communities,” she said. “We feel so fortunate to be here.”

The Animal House will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
