BURLINGTON, Vt. — Vermont scored in the final minute of regulation, then Mike Stenerson won it after 3:13 of overtime to sink the University of Maine 4-3 in a Hockey East game Ftiday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The two-game series between the Catamounts (5-1-1, 3-1-1) and Black Bears (3-5-1, 2-1) will conclude Saturday night.
The Black Bears opened the scoring 12:37 into the game on Devin Shore’s power-play goal from Cam Brown and Steven Swavely. Maine made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Connor Leen with 30 seconds left in the opening period.
Colin Markison cut it to 2-1 on a power play 6:18 into the second period. Markinson added his second goal with 5:47 left in the period to make it 2-2. Brown just beat the clock to put Maine ahead again, scoring on a power play from Ben Hutton and Swavely with two-tenths of a second left in the period.
Matt Morris made 15 of his 33 saves in the third for the Black Bears. Vermont pulled its goalie and tied it 20 seconds later when Mario Puskarich scored from Alexx Privitera and Jake Fallon.
