STORRS, Conn. — The University of Maine women’s hockey team opened its two-game trip with a 3-3 tie Friday night Connecticut.
Maine’s Brooke Stacey scored her first career goal 46 seconds into the game. The Huskies tied it at 3:13, but Kelsey McSorley regained the lead for the Black Bears at 11:18.
Connecticut had the edge in the second period with goals from Kayla Campo and Leah Lum. Hailey Browne supplied a goal for Maine to keep the contest 3-3.
Meaghan Treacy held off the Huskies with 25 saves. Connecticut goalie Elaine Chuli finished with 35 stops.
Maine is 3-5-2 while the Huskies are 2-4-4.
UNE 4, ST. MICHAEL’S 1: Gabby Crugnale scored two unassisted goals to power the University of New England in a nonleague game at Colchester, Vermont.
Cassandra Connolly and Shannon Smith also scored for the Nor’easters. Amanda Kempainen opened the scoring for St. Michael’s 4:44 into the game. Crugnale scored the equalizer on a power play.
Samantha Scobee finished with 17 saves in goal for UNE. Tina Frasca saved 34 for the Purple Knights.
MEN’S HOCKEY
UNE 4, STONEHILL 1: The University of New England scored four goals in the first 11:20 of the game and held on for a win in an opener at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford.
Sophomore Trevor Fleurent scored 24 seconds into the contest. Zeth Zielinski scored on a breakaway less than two minutes later. Sam Vikich scored on a power play midway through the period. The Nor’easters made it 4-0 when Jared Melman netted his 30th career goal.
FIELD HOCKEY
UNH 3, MAINE 2: Emma Compagna scored off a rebound in overtime to give the University of New Hampshire (7-11, 4-1 America East) a victory over Maine (10-9, 3-2) at Orono.
The Wildcats took the lead 15:14 into the game when Jackie Hozza scored on a rebound.
The Black Bears tied it at 30:16 on Marissa Shaw’s goal. Zoe Berkey gave Maine the lead 1:45 into the second.
Linsey Nerbonne used a spin move in the circle to break free for the tying goal 10 minutes later.
The second-ranked Wildcats and the third-ranked Black Bears will meet again Thursday in the opening round of the America East tournament at the University of Albany.
