BRUNSWICK — Maggie Godley provided an early lead, and the Bowdoin College women’s soccer team secured the second seed in the NESCAC tournament with a 3-1 victory over Tufts on Tuesday afternoon.
Godley scored in the third minute, heading in a cross from Abby Einwag. The Polar Bears (11-3, 8-2) added to lead in the 25th minute, when Evan Fencik scored off a through pass from Amanda Kinneston.
Victoria Stoj scored for Tufts (7-6-2, 3-6-1) before halftime, but Kiersten Turner added an insurance goal in the 64th minute.
Bowdoin’s Bridget McGarry had two saves, both in the final 30 minutes.
UNE 0, CURRY 0: The Nor’easters (11-3-2, 5-2-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference) had a 26-13 shot advantage but settled for a scoreless tie with Colonels (11-6-2, 1-6-2) in a regular-season finale in Milton, Massachusetts.
FIELD HOCKEY
UNE 3, USM 1: Hannah Cutting and Beth Sullivan teamed up on the first two goals, and the Nor’easters (13-5) held off the Huskies (8-11) in Biddeford.
Sullivan set up Cutting for UNE’s first goal in the 16th minute, then had a goal of her own off a Cutting pass in the 38th.
Kaylie Andrews scored on a loose ball in the 51st minute for the Huskies, but Vonde Saunders answered five minutes later.
ST. JOSEPH’S 2, PLYMOUTH STATE 1: Amanda Celata scored her second goal of the game with 5:26 remaining to push the Monks (14-2) past the Panthers (11-4) in Plymouth, New Hampshire, in their regular-season finale.
Plymouth took the lead at 13:34 on a goal by Kaitlyn Wilder. Celata tied it nine minutes later with an assist from Theresa Hendrix.
Emma Astbury had eight saves for the Monks.
MEN’S SOCCER
CURRY 1, UNE 0: Nick Gilman scored with one second left in the second overtime to lift the Colonels (10-8-1, 4-5 CCC) over the Nor’easters (9-6-2, 3-5-1), in a regular-season finale in Milton, Massachusetts.
Aidan McParland made 12 saves for UNE. Curry’s Dan Johnson had five.
SALEM STATE 1, USM 0: Mohamed Sentissi converted a pass from Pat Scanlon in the 36th minute and the Vikings (3-11-1) slipped past the Huskies (2-14-2) at Gorham.
Salem had a 20-7 advantage in shots.
