KENNEBUNK — Phyllis Jones Maling, 93, a resident of Fletcher Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, after a brief illness.

She was born in Kennebunk on Nov. 4, 1921, a daughter of Luther and Ruby Madeline (Drown) Jones.

Phyllis graduated from Kennebunk High School, Class of 1940, where she was an all-star athlete and also met her husband, Lowell. She attended college through New England Telephone Company.

After high school, Phyllis went to work for New England Telephone Company as manager for more than 40 years, retiring in 1979.

She was proud to be from Kennebunk, and participated in the Homecoming Parade on her 90th birthday in 2012.

She enjoying camping with her family, especially at her favorite spot, Point Sebago, loved traveling with friends and talked of her trips to Hawaii and Branson, Missouri. Florida was her second home, first with her late husband and later in life with her daughter, family and friends. She loved the morning newspaper and coffee, also an occasional evening glass of wine. She loved the beach at Fortunes Rocks and the many family gatherings there. Phyllis was looking forward to snow and Christmas with family. Phyllis loved her cat, KOKO.

She was a member of the Christ Church of Kennebunk, the Telephone Pioneers and Madonna Chapter of Order of Eastern Star of Kennebunk.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Lowell C. Maling, who died in 1988; and three brothers and two sisters, Weldon, Kenneth and Warren Jones, and Marion King and Wilma Cheney.

She is survived by: her beloved daughter, Cathy M. Surran and her husband Michael of Kennebunk and St. Petersburg, Florida; seven grandchildren, Michael, Lori, Bethany, Ryan, Christopher, Craig and Chelsea; six great-grandchildren, Alexis, Elizabeth, Evan, Fiona, Willow and Lillith; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A Eastern Star service will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration of life funeral service at 11:15 a.m. at the chapel with the Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating. Phyllis will be laid in rest beside her husband at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O.
