The Maine Red Claws hired Seth Cooper and Nathaniel Mitchell as assistant coaches, joining first-year head coach Scott Morrison.
Cooper spent five years on the basketball staff at Indiana University and before that was a video coordinator for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Mitchell was a graduate assistant at Fresno State last season, and previously worked as a special assistant coach for the Canadian junior men’s national team.
HIGH SCHOOLS
CROSS COUNTRY REGIONALS: The Maine Principals’ Association is alerting spectators that there will be no on-site parking at the Twin Brook Recreational Facility in Cumberland for Saturday’s cross country regional championships due to the heavy rain.
Parking will be available at Greely High School, 303 Main St. in Cumberland, where shuttles will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The first race begins at 10 a.m.
Handicap parking will be available at Twin Brook and team bus drivers may unload runners by the Red Barn and park in the lot at 168 Greely Road.
CYCLING
USA CYCLING: Lance Armstrong can’t ride in a South Carolina event this weekend with several of his former U.S. Postal Service teammates.
Armstrong had hoped to ride with George Hincapie and other former teammates at the non-competitive ride that bears Hincapie’s name. But because the ride is still authorized by USA Cycling, Armstrong can’t participate under his lifetime ban for using performance-enhancing drugs.
TENNIS
SWISS INDOORS: Top-seeded Roger Federer had to fight back from a set down before beating Denis Istomin 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.
Federer struggled in the opening set and even walked toward his chair early in the first game before realizing there was still a point to play.
VALENCIA OPEN: David Ferrer and Andy Murray advanced to the quarterfinals in Spain after easy wins against error-prone opponents.
The top-seeded Ferrer beat Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2 while the third-seeded Murray dispatched Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-4 on the indoor hard court.
WTA FINALS: Serena Williams rebounded from the worst beating of her professional career to rout Eugenie Bouchard 6-1, 6-1 in Singapore, and will have to wait until Friday’s match between Simona Halep and Ana Ivanovic to know if she is through to the semis.
GOLF
PGA: Erik Compton carded a 5-under 65 for an early share of the lead with Brian Harman and Michael Thompson in the McGladrey Classic at St. Simons Island, Georgia.
LPGA: Jessica Korda birdied five of the first eight holes and finished with a 6-under 66 to take the first-round lead in the Blue Bay LPGA at Hainan Island, China.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: Overall champion Anna Fenninger, a 25-year-old Austrian, was voted skier of the year by journalists.
Fenninger, who won Olympic gold in super-G at the Sochi Games, earned her first overall championship last season and also took the giant slalom title.
