I strongly urge all voters to re-elect Dan Cabral for county commissioner in District 3. I have known Dan since we were both elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. Within a few months of taking office, the county finances were discovered to be in disarray ”“ our undesignated fund had a deficit of $1.2 million and Standard & Poor’s rating was downgraded to A-.
In 2007, Dan was part of an ad-hoc committee formed of commissioners and municipal officials, charged with forming a plan to get York County out of this financial crisis. Since then, York County government has turned around; instituting strong financial controls and budgetary oversights. It is now a professionally run organization, having hired York County’s first finance director and most recently a human resources director. Among other accomplishments, our fund balance has an almost $4 million surplus, we have had an essentially level tax assessment for five years running, and our S&P rating was upgraded to A in 2012 and to AA in 2014.
Dan has been an integral part of this financial turnaround, having worked closely with the county management team to keep budgets fiscally responsible, while still providing services the public needs.
As county commissioner over the last eight years, Dan has acquired the knowledge and experience York County needs. I strongly urge voters in Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Dayton, Hollis and Buxton to re-elect Dan Cabral for county commissioner.
