The Durham Board of Selectmen has chosen Ruth Glaeser of Topsham as the new administrative assistant for the town, succeeding Janet Smith.
Jeff Wakeman, board chairman, said Wednesday morning that Glaeser, the deputy town clerk in Gardiner, will begin her new job on Nov. 6, pending a signed contract he expects Thursday or Friday. The town has been operating without an administrator since Sept. 9.
Wakeman said that Glaeser will be paid $41,000, with the provision that she receive a raise if she wins a favorable 90-day review. Smith, now the town manager in Richmond, earned $51,500 as Durham’s administrator.
Glaeser requested and was granted extra time to begin her new job, because someone resigned at the Gardiner Town Office and she wanted to see that town through its elections, Wakeman said.
The board considered 19 candidates, and interviewed five, Wakeman said.
“She had a very good background in municipal government, and being able to do all the things you need to do to keep this office going,” Wakeman said. “She has not held an administrative position, so there will be some learning involved, but she has a good all-around background.”
