MILES CHAPIN
Miles Chapin, a native of Arrowsic, Maine, and a luminary in the world of New England sculpture, will preview his planned sculpture for the entrance to Brunswick’s transportation center at a public reception, Tuesday, October 21, 7 – 8:30 p.m. It will be held at the Center for Orthopedics on the 2nd floor overlooking the site.
The black granite sculpture will be approximately seven-feet tall, welcoming new arrivals to Brunswick and leaving a lasting impression on departing passengers.
The Chapin sculpture is one of several public art projects in various stages of planning and execution that are an outgrowth of the Brunswick Downtown Improvement Plan. Two completed ones, Tariq Haq’s banners at Hannaford Supermarket and Lucy Walker’s mural in the waiting room at the Mid Coast Primary Care & Walk In Clinic, will be discussed.
Chapin grew up in Arrowsic and attended The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, where he received his B. A. in Human Ecology. Now living in Vermont with his wife and two children, he has exhibited his sculptures at several sites in Maine, including The Boothbay Botanical Gardens, Maine Audubon Society, and The Maine Maritime Museum. One exhibitor commented: “Miles Chapin is a rising star of an artist. His sculpture shows a quality of design and skill far beyond his years…an artist rooted in Coastal Maine.” He was one of seven artists participating in this year’s prestigious Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, where he produced a piece for Calais, Maine.
Susan Weems, President of Brunswick Public Art, stated: “The reception for Mr. Chapin is a special opportunity for residents and contributors to meet Miles and learn details about the sculpture that will be installed next spring, as well as to appreciate the unique place that public art holds in the community.”
Refreshments are provided by Scarlet Begonias. The reception is free and open to the public.
