Regarding rural libraries in Maine closing because of lack of funding (“Rural Maine libraries on borrowed time as towns seek ways to save tax dollars,” Sept. 28), two suggestions:

Charge a small fee for services: Twenty-five cents or even 10 cents per book borrowed would help defray costs.

Or make a crowd funding appeal. If a man can use crowd-funding to raise $55,000 to make potato salad (a “news” item that appeared in the same edition of the paper), surely there are plenty of book lovers around the planet who would happily donate money to help keep libraries open.
