KITTERY — Anthony Sowell rushed for 122 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only six carries in the first half, and Traip Academy cruised to a 40-6 win over Telstar in a Western Class D football game Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (3-2) opened the scoring with just over six minutes left in the first quarter on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Angelo Succi to David Wilson. They made it 12-0 less than two minutes later when Joe Cava- naugh returned an interception 39 yards.
Sowell scored his touchdowns in the first three minutes of the second quarter to give Traip a 26-0 lead.
Telstar (0-6) got its lone touchdown with two minutes left in the first half on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Mike Dougherty to Devin Merrill.
Nate Henderson closed out the first-half scoring for Traip with a 5-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds remaining.
Traip’s final touchdown came on a 3-yard run by Donovan Robillard in the third quarter.
WATERVILLE 46, MDI 20: The Purple Panthers (6-0) racked up 498 yards – 435 on the ground – in a win over the Trojans (2-4) at Waterville.
Cam Thomas, A.J. Godin and Jared Spear each rushed for two touchdowns. Thomas gained 182 yards on 18 carries, while Spear had 107 yards on seven carries. Dan Pooler added 68 yards, and Alex Pressey had 43 yards.
The win sets up a battle of unbeaten teams next Saturday when Waterville travels across the bridge to play rival Winslow (6-0).
Two of the Purple Panthers’ touchdown runs came on plays longer than 50 yards. Thomas had a 58-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Spear broke free for a 57-yard score in the third quarter.
The Purple Panthers’ only problem was turnovers. On back-to-back drives in the second quarter, Waterville fumbled the ball in its own territory, recovered both times by the Trojans (2-4). But the Waterville defense got the ball back on downs after the first fumble and a punt on the following series.
The Purple Panthers held MDI to 178 yards. Jalique Keened led the Trojans with 83 rushing yards on 15 carries.
