ORONO — The University of Maine men’s hockey team scored five times in the third period to pull away and earn an 8-3 win over New Brunswick in an exhibition game Sunday.

Nolan Vesey gave Maine the lead five minutes into the third period. Steve Swavely, Cedric Lacroix, Cam Brown, Jack Musil and Vesey each had a goal and an assist for the Black Bears. Maine got a goal each from Dan Renouf, Conor Riley and Devin Shore.

Matt Morris, Sean Romeo and Chris Howat combined to make 25 saves for the Black Bears.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

NEW HAMPSHIRE 0, MAINE 0: Claudia Dube-Trempe stopped all 13 shots she faced in net for the Black Bears (3-6-3, 1-0-2) as they battled to a scoreless draw in an America East game against the Wildcats (4-7-1, 1-1-1) at Orono.

ST. JOSEPH’S 6, CASTLETON 1: Kelsey Dumond opened the scoring just 3:07 into the game and finished with a pair of goals to pace the Monks (8-1) to a win over the Spartans (0-8) in Standish.

Bailey Cutler added one goal and one assist for the Monks and Amanda Celata, Effie Drew and Theresa Hendrix scored one goal apiece.

BASEBALL

UNH (CLUB) 9, SMCC 4: The Wildcats scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Seawolves in the championship game of the NECA tournament in South Portland.

SMCC cut the deficit to 6-2 in the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Phillip Langley and Alex Brown.

The Seawolves advanced to the championship game by defeating NHTI 7-1 earlier in the day.

SMCC broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning and added three more runs in the sixth.

SOFTBALL

UNH (CLUB) 3, SMCC 1: Katie Steinmertz struck out six batters and walked one while tossing a three-hitter for the Wildcats as they scored three runs in the top of the third inning and held off the Seawolves in the opening game of the NECA tournament at South Portland.

Emily Turner had a hit and scored the lone run for the Seawolves in the bottom of the third inning.

UNH went on to win the championship with a 2-0 victory over NHTI.
