It’s homecoming time again at Thornton Academy. I want to take this opportunity to invite our entire community to celebrate this special season with us. The TA campus will be alive with activity on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Academics are at the core of what we do, but schools have a broader responsibility as well. We help students develop character and grow up, gain a sense of self and connection, and adapt to changing situations with grace and confidence. We encourage our students to bring their talents to the fore, to appreciate the similarities and the differences in others around them. They learn that they don’t have to do this alone; we are all part of a larger community, and we are each other’s greatest strength.
Two weeks ago, at TA’s annual Friday night home football game, I was moved to see nearly 1,000 spectators wearing T-shirts in support of a local family who lost a loved one recently to cancer. At TA, we are purposeful in introducing our students to the idea of being part of something larger than themselves, helping them to realize the rewards of coming together to help one another. That sea of Friday night T-shirts, so many of them worn by our students, convinced me that our message is getting through.
So join us for homecoming. It’s a cherished TA tradition, offering something for everyone who takes pride in being part of this community. Crowds will line Main Street to watch the parade. Our annual Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony will recognize the contributions of outstanding TA athletes and coaches over the decades. Our students relish the traditional homecoming events: the pep rally, the class floats, the football game and the Saturday night dance in the gym.
To alumni and friends alike, welcome home. I hope to see you on campus.
