OLD ORCHARD BEACH — John B. Swinehart, 58, of Old Orchard Beach, lost his battle to cancer Thursday, Sept. 25, while at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, where he was surrounded by family and friends.

John was born in Henniker, New Hampshire, the son of Agnes Cullen Swinehart and Lewis Stanley Swinehart II.

John attended Inter-Lakes High School in Meredith, New Hampshire and graduated from Bangor Community College.

John retired from the Town of Cape Elizabeth, where he had worked as a dispatcher, after 27 years of service to the community.

He was an active member of Bill and Bob’s Club and longtime volunteer for the parent’s associations at his daughters’ schools in Old Orchard Beach.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brothers, David and Lewis Swinehart III.

John is survived by: his three beautiful daughters, Mary and husband Rodney Lake and their sons Walter and Frederick Lake of Cape Elizabeth, Alice Swinehart of North Carolina and Rose Swinehart of Old Orchard Beach; his longtime partner, constant companion and loving caregiver, Elizabeth Cabot; sister, Anne Sweeney of Portland, Oregon; and brothers, Mark Swinehart of Concord, New Hampshire and Curt Swinehart of Exeter, New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in John’s name to the Hospice of Southern Maine, where John was a volunteer before he became ill. The address is 180 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074. At John’s request, there will be no memorial service. Arrangements provided by Hope Memorial Chapel in Biddeford.
