BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s soccer team beat the University of Maine at Farmington 4-0 to earn its fifth straight win and equal its best start since 2003.

The Polar Bears improved to 5-0 and extended their winning streak against the Beavers (1-4) to six.

Bowdoin scored all four goals in the first half. Kiersten Turner got the Polar Bears going with a goal 6 minutes, 3 seconds into the game. Brigit Bergin had an assist on the goal.

Just 1:10 later, Amanda Kinneston made it 2-0.

Kinneston then assisted Julia Bottone, who chipped a shot over UMF goalie Sam Hatch (nine saves) with 17:30 left in the first half. Jill Rathke scored the first goal of her college career in the 42nd minute to cap the scoring.

Bridget McCarthy and Rachel Stout combined to earn the shutout.

Rhode Island 3, Maine 0: Simone Hansen and Nicole Brennan scored in the first half as the Rams (8-1-1) beat the Black Bears (2-6-1) in a nonconference game in Kingston, Rhode Island.

Hansen chipped in a shot on a corner kick to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Brennan scored on a penalty kick just 2:24 later. Samantha Leyh added a goal in the 50th minute.

Claudia Dube-Trempe finished with eight saves for Maine, while Lindsey Reilly had nine saves for Rhode Island.

AP POLL: East Carolina is ranked in The Associated Press poll for the first time since 2008, and Mississippi State moved into the Top 25 for the first time in two seasons after breaking a long losing streak against LSU.

The top seven teams are the same as last week, starting with No. 1 Florida State, which escaped 23-17 in overtime against Clemson on Saturday night.

East Carolina is No. 23 after a record-setting 70-41 victory against North Carolina. ECU has beaten Atlantic Coast Conference teams the last two weeks, previously winning at Virginia Tech. East Carolina (3-1) is in its first season in the American Athletic Conference.

Mississippi State is No. 14 after beating LSU 34-29 to end a 14-game skid to the Tigers.
