BIDDEFORD — Emelda “Chuckles” Cyr, 88, of Biddeford, died on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2014 at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

She was born on July 18, 1926, one of 15 children born to Walter and Marianne (Cyr) Cyr in Hamlin.

She was educated in Van Buren schools.

Known as “Chuckles” for her boisterous laugh and ready hugs, she was often seen “dressed for the occasion” as a snowman, pumpkin, football mascot, reindeer, farmer Joe or witch.

She worked at Bayview for the Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for 20 years and at Edward’s Plant and Maremont Corp. in Saco for more than 30 years, retiring in 1991.

She chauffeured for the Good Shepherd Sisters for 20 years and helped whoever needed assistance. Emelda also volunteered her time to the Kidney Foundation.

She enjoyed knitting and cooking.

Emelda was preceded in death by: 13 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by: one brother, Cyprien Cyr and his wife Dorothy of Noank, Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews.

At her request, Emelda donated her body to the University of New England. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Convent, 409 Pool Road, Biddeford, ME 04005.
