Thumbs up to the long-awaited resolution of the leadership at the Market Basket chain of grocery stores. Although the first Maine store opened in Biddeford just a year ago, the impact was felt far beyond the city’s borders here in southern Maine. This was apparent from the many customers who were happy to return to the store late last week once again, who hailed from Arundel, Lyman, Waterboro and more. Customers and staff at the Biddeford store said they were thrilled to see Arthur T. Demoulas, or “Artie T,” as he is known by employees, returned to his place as CEO of the company. A spokesperson for Demoulas announced a deal had been reached late Wednesday night, the terms of which see him buying out 50.5 percent of the company owned by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas and his side of the family for $1.5 billion. It was a celebration Thursday morning at the store, and we’re pleased to see workers and customers flocking to the store once again, and to see that when people unite, they can accomplish great things together.
Thumbs up to all those who attended and helped plan for and organize the first-ever Biddeford Ball last weekend. The event was an opportunity for people to don their best, ball-worthy outfits, while raising money for local nonprofits. Special recognition must go to Roxi Suger and her husband, Julian Shlaver, who moved to Biddeford in 2013. Suger operates an apparel design company called Angelrox and a storefront called Suger on Main Street. The two came up with the idea for the ball. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds were to go to three missions supported by the city’s Union Church: Stone Soup Food Pantry, the Saco meals program and Seeds of Hope neighborhood center. The remaining 75 percent was earmarked to help with the exterior renovation effort of the Marble Block, the home of Engine, a nonprofit community arts organization.
Thumbs up to Saco police in their collaboration last week. Thanks to the efforts of Saco officers, in a joint investigation with New York Police Department detectives Robert Klein and Jacqueline Pagan, a Saco man was arrested and charged with the April 16 theft of a paving roller from a business in The Bronx, New York. After successfully arresting the man, NYPD took him back to their city to proceed with the case there. The paving roller, valued at more than $20,000, was also recovered, and the owner was making arrangements to come to Maine to retrieve it, police said.
Thumbs up to Palace Diner owners Chad Conley and Greg Mitchell for being nominated as one of the 50 finalists in Bon Appétit magazine’s top 10 new restaurants in the country. Although the diner didn’t make the top 10 list, the owners said it brought some attention to their new venture ”“ the diner opened in March and has been serving breakfast and lunch ever since. The owners, who are also the chefs, also added dinner on weekends over the summer. This is more great news for Biddeford’s business community, and we’re glad Conley and Mitchell took a chance on reviving the classic diner car.
