Saco senior citizens take note: Last November at the polls, I conducted a survey to determine if seniors were interested in joining a senior club in Saco and what activities they would be interested in.
The response was overwhelming. Since that survey, some of the activities requested have been put into place at the Saco Parks & Rec Center on Franklin Street. The Indoor Walking Program and Tai Chi are in place and will resume in September after the summer break. On Thursdays, the Open Door Senior Program meets for bingo. There was a lot of interest ”“ according to the survey ”“ in various board and card games, but people have not been coming. There were also requests for computer training, and I noticed that the OOB/Saco Adult Education are offering these programs.
The largest request ”“ more than 77 percent ”“ of those surveyed wanted trips, long-distance and one-day. I have been in contact with individuals who are willing to plan these trips for our seniors. We have scheduled an informational meeting at the Saco Train Station on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. At that time, a trip to America’s “music cities,” which will cover Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans, will be presented and reservations taken for those interested. We will also be discussing one and two-day trips within Maine. The purpose of this meeting is to determine which trips would be most popular with seniors, so we can start scheduling them. If you want to travel but would prefer to go with a group, please attend this meeting and find out more about what we are planning.
