A new season of broadcasts from the National Theatre in London’s West End to Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater kicks off on Thursday, September 4 at 7 p.m. with Euripides’ powerful tragedy Medea. Carrie Cracknell directs this new version by Ben Power, which marks the return of Helen McCrory to the National to take the title role; the cast also includes Michaela Coel, Danny Sapani and Cath Whitefield. The production will be designed by Tom Scutt, with lighting by Lucy Carter, choreography by Lucy Guerin and sound design by Gregory Clarke.
Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she has left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear.
Helen McCrory’s theatre work includes The Last of the Haussmans, Blood Wedding and The Seagull for the National Theatre; The Late Middle Classes, Old Times, Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya (Donmar Warehouse); and As You Like It (West End). Her extensive film and television work includes Skyfall, Hugo, Leaving, A Little Chaos, Penny Dreadful, The Queen, Harry Potter, Street Life (RTS & Monte Carlo Best Actress Awards), Anna Karenina, The Jury and North Square (Critics’ Circle Award).
Carrie Cracknell’s recent work includes Blurred Lines (National Theatre), A Doll’s House (Young Vic, West End and New York) and Wozzeck (ENO). She is Associate Director at the Royal Court Theatre and an Associate Artist at the Young Vic, and was previously Artistic Director of The Gate Theatre.
Tickets are $15 Adults and $13 for Lincoln Theater members. Youth 18 and under tickets are $5. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the theater office at 563- 3424 or at the door. The second offering of the National Theatre Live season will be the Tennessee William’s classic, A Streetcar Named Desire. Starring Gillian Anderson, Streetcar will play for two showings (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) on Thursday September 16.
