Lincoln County Community Theater, the resident theater company of Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater, is pleased to announce its new series “Sundays Without Scenery: Actors, A Script, and Your Imagination.” “Sundays Without Scenery,” which will usually take place on the final Sunday of each month, will offer a reading of a contemporary play, which may or may not go on to become a full scale production at the theater. The actors will have rehearsed, a stage manager will set the scene, and the audience’s imagination will fill in the rest as they listen to the spoken text. LCCT’s goal is to provide opportunities for more actors and directors to “hit the boards” without requiring our hard-working but limited stage crew to have the responsibility of mounting each piece as a fullystaged production. Each reading will be followed by a “talkback” with the actors and the director to allow discussion of the play and to assess interest in whether we might pursue a full-scale production.
The initial play, which has particular resonance during this season of WWI commemorations, is “Heroes,” adapted from Gérald Sibleyras’ “Le Vent des Peupliers” by acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard. With direction by John Mulcahy, performances are slated for Sunday September 28 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. “Heroes,” the recipient of London’s Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, takes place in 1959. Three aging World War I veterans find themselves residing together in a military retirement home in the French countryside. Our three heroes set into motion a courageous and adventurous escape plan to make their escape once and for all. What will their final destination be — Indochina? The local village? Or perhaps just to the top of the hill.
Actors who wish to be considered to take part in the readings, or other LCCT productions slated for this upcoming season (including Steven Dietz’ ”Becky’s New Car” in November and another concert presentation in March), are invited to audition Tuesday Sept 2 or Thursday Sept 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Porter Hall at Skidompha Library in downtown Damariscotta (please use the Elm Street entrance).
