More spaces on Falcons Football grades 2-12

Football season is already here, but it is never too late to sign up for Falcons football. Spaces on football teams are available for the following grades: Pee wee, grades 2-3; youth, grades 4-6; middle school, grades 7-8 and high school, grades 9-12.

The Pee Wee and Middle School teams are looking to add players to boost the roster. For more information, contact Becky Michaud at beckymish@comcast.net.

Community chorus invites singers

The Greater Freeport Community Chorus, directed by Virgil Bozeman, will begin rehearsals for its winter concerts on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Merriconeag Waldorf School on Desert Road in Freeport. Registration will run from 6-6:30 p.m., with the rehearsal to follow. Rehearsals are held on Sundays from 6:30-9 p.m. at the school.

The chorus is an adult, mixed-voice group whose members are residents of about 20 Midcoast towns. No audition or previous experience with choral singing is required. All singers are welcome, but the chorus is particularly in need of tenors.

Membership dues of $70 cover the cost of music and other expenses. Dues are waived for high school students. New singers are welcome to attend a couple of rehearsals before deciding whether to join.

The winter concerts are scheduled for Dec. 12 and 13. The program will include Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass” and carols of John Rutter. For more information, call 666-8817, see www.gfccweb.org or find the chorus on Facebook.

Rescheduled fireworks on Saturday

A special fireworks display is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30, at 9 p.m., following the Brett Dennen concert at L.L. Bean Discovery Park. The July 4 fireworks were rescheduled due to weather conditions.

Last Family Barnyard Program

Wolfe’s Neck Farm will have its final Summer Family Barnyard Program for the season on Saturday, Aug. 30. Visitors are invited into the barn and pastures to meet and learn about the animals and their care. Following the barn and pastures visit, a short trip to the newly renovated discovery garden will provide guests with an opportunity to learn, play, touch, smell and taste. The program culminates in a tractor ride up into West Bay.

The programs are open to all ages and are scheduled Saturday morning, 10 a.m.- noon and Saturday afternoon, 1-3. The cost is $8/person (children not yet walking are free). Participation is limited to 12 individuals per session. Reservations are recommended. Call 865-4469.

Harvest Dance on September calendar

Wolfe’s Neck Farm will hold its annual Harvest Dance at the historic Mallett Barn, Wolfe’s Neck Road, featuring the band, the Ghost of Paul Revere, on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 6-11p.m. A cash bar from Gritty’s and an assortment of local food trucks and vendors will be available. From 6:30-7:30 p.m., there will be a contra dance, followed by music from the band. New this year is a “Tickets & Tents” package deal, including camping, hayrides and more. ‘Roman Holiday’ to be screened

The 1953 classic, “Roman Holiday,” with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, is the selection for this month’s free movie at the Freeport Community Library, Thursday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. The film features many of the iconic backgrounds found in the Eternal City.

The library hosts a free community movie the first Thursday of each month at 1 p.m.

YMCA hosts Parkinson’s support group

Richard Webster and Carmen Melito, both diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, have started an informal support group for people just diagnosed, caregivers and people who have been living with the diagnoses, at the YMCA of Southern Maine, Casco Bay Branch, Freeport, every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly 1 million people in the US. Although promising research is being conducted, there is no cure for or definitive cause of Parkinson’s disease. For more information, call 865-9600.

Writer shares ‘Thoughts of an Average Joe’

Author Brian Daniels will be at the Freeport Community Library on Monday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., to read from his humorous new book, “Thoughts of an Average Joe,” published in April by Yarmouth-based Islandport Press.

In his new book, Daniels introduces readers to Joe Wright, whose commentaries voice the confusion and angst of a clueless, middle-aged, small-town Mainer stuck in the 20th century. Daniels is an avid outdoorsman, a newspaper columnist, novelist, musician and songwriter. Since 1984, he has practiced optometry in Brunswick, where he lives with his wife, Laurene.

Writers and poets soiree

“Upstairs at Azure,” a writers and poets soiree, meets Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m., at Azure Cafe ?, 123 Main St., Freeport. Writers share their work in an intimate and affirming group.

“Upstairs at Azure” takes its name from the space provided by Jonas Werner, owner of Azure Cafe ?, and a poet himself. Azure will also be providing wine and snacks. Membership is free, but a $5 contribution is suggested for each meeting. Enrollment is limited to ensure all attendees participate. Writers and poets, published or unpublished, are invited to join. Arts and crafts on lawn

The First Parish Church Congregational hosts an Arts & Crafts Market on the front lawn of the church, 40 Main St., Freeport, every second and last Saturday of the month, through October, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Vendor spaces are still available. For each market day, one space is available, free of charge, for not-profit groups. The upcoming dates are Aug. 30, Sept. 13 and 27, Oct. 11 and 25. Park begins new kids’ nature program

Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Freeport is offering a new program to immerse young kids in nature. The new Preschool Nature Exploration program will provide a fun and interactive environment for kids ages 0-5 to explore and enjoy the state park with their caregivers. Activities will include a nature story reading, a fun craft and a short guided walk within the park. Themes will include forest ecology, insects, birds, the rocky shore, pond life and more.

“This program will encourage more youngsters to enjoy and appreciate nature and our parks. We get a lot of preschool visitors to our park each year, and we are excited to offer a new program designed just for them,” said Andy Hutchinson, Wolfe’s Neck Woods park manager.

Girls on the Run registration

Registration for the fall season of Girls on the Run, a program hosted by the Casco Bay YMCA, is now open. Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in third through fifth grades. Life skills are taught through interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The team meets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. for 10 weeks and will begin on Sept. 9. The program fee is $130 and financial assistance is available. For more information or to register, see http://girlsontherunmaine.org/.

Talk about books

Book lovers are invited to join a discussion group that meets at Freeport Community Library on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. The group meets in the library sunroom year round, and discussions typically last until 7:45 p.m. with light refreshments provided by group members. The upcoming book discussion for Wednesday, Sept. 3 is “The House of Sand and Fog,” by Andre Dubus III, a National Book Award finalist, Oprah Book Club Pick, New York Times bestseller and the basis for the Oscar-nominated film by the same title. The novel selected for Oct. 1 is “The Stone Diaries,” by Carol Shields. The selection for Nov. 5 is Jane Austen’s “Emma.”
