Ӣ Thumbs up to the Old Orchard Beach Conservation Commission for their work to construct and install a new kiosk at Blueberry Plains. The new structure provides information about this unique public walking trail and also includes a blackboard for people to leave messages. With its lowbush blueberries and sandy trails, this property is a nice asset for both residents and visitors alike, and this kiosk should help draw attention to all it has to offer.

”¢ Thumbs up to the new buddy program in Biddeford, through the Ross Community Center, that is helping connect elderly people who live alone with a community member who can check in on their well-being on a regular basis. So far, only one pair is taking part in this program, and we’d like to encourage people to reach out to anyone they know who might benefit from this program or be willing to volunteer for it, so that participation can increase. It’s a particular benefit for far-flung family members of elderly people who live in the area, to help them know that there is someone checking in on their loved one and who they can contact if they can’t get ahold of the person. To take part, contact the Ross Center at 282-5005.

Ӣ Thumbs up to all of those who took part in the annual Acton Fair this past weekend, which offered a variety of attractions, from the live animals to the midway rides. This fair is a great way for farmers to connect with one another for a good time, as well as educate the greater population about their work and lifestyle. From the pig scramble to the tractor pulls, the Acton Fair is always a fun celebration of rural life, and hopefully will be for years to come.

”¢ Thumbs up to the neighbors of the property on Reed Street in Springvale who have stepped up to help remove trash and debris from the site. This volunteer effort is an ideal way for the city to avoid the expense of having it cleaned up professionally and/or taking legal action to get it done. The property owner has been issued notices repeatedly that he is in violation of city and state regulations, but has taken no action in cleaning up this eyesore trash heap. Even though it’s not their responsibility, these neighbors are literally taking matters into their own hands in an effort to keep their neighborhood presentable. It’s an encouraging sign of community pride, and we hope others in the area will also lend a hand to help beautify the area.

”¢ Thumbs up to the Saco School Unit and school board for cutting costs by consolidating two jobs in the transportation department that can now be done by one person. The district will save about $12,000 by combining its part-time maintenance person with its utility driver, now that the buses will no longer be traveling to Dayton and Old Orchard Beach due to new school configurations. It’s nice to see the district finding cost savings after the shifting around of schools and we’d like to applaud their efforts at efficiency and saving taxpayer money.
