Residents of Regional School Unit 5 can weigh in Tuesday on whether Freeport should withdraw from the three-town district formed in 2009 with Durham and Pownal.
A public hearing on a withdrawal agreement, approved by the school board in July and by the Maine Department of Education this month, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Freeport Community Center.
Freeport voters will decide Nov. 4 whether to leave the district.
Under the withdrawal plan, Freeport would become a standalone district as of July 2015. Durham and Pownal students would be allowed to attend Freeport schools the following year under a tuition contract and those students would be allowed to stay through graduation.
After the 2015-2016 school year, Freeport High School, the only high school in the district, would continue to take new students from Durham and Pownal as long as the school does not exceed its capacity of 500 students.
Last year, 515 students attended Freeport High, with 326 from Freeport, 131 from Durham and 58 from Pownal.
The Brunswick School Board has agreed to guarantee Durham and Pownal students enrollment at Brunswick High School.
Pownal, which doesn’t have its own middle school, would be allow to send students to Freeport Middle School under the agreement.
