The superintendent of Gorham schools announced Monday that he plans to retire at the end of the school year.

Ted Sharp, who has been Gorham’s superintendent for 11 years, said he plans to dedicate more time to the international master’s degree program at Framingham State University, where he has worked as a professor for the past 15 years. His retirement will take effect June 30, 2015.

Sharp announced his decision to retire during an annual assembly of the school district’s teachers, administrators and support staff.

“I am so very grateful for the many opportunities that I have experienced as an educator, particularly grateful for the decade-plus that I have had the privilege to be your colleague, working with you to provide our students with a rigorous, substantive, enlightened and caring educational program,” he said.

His announcement was met with a standing ovation, according to the school department.

The district, which has a $34.2 million budget, had 2,666 students last year in its five schools.
