Mary E. Voorhees, 89, of Sun City Center, Fla., and Bath, Maine, died on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at the Gosnell House in Scarborough, Maine, after a brief illness.
Mary was born in St. John, New Brunswick on April 10, 1925, to John D. and Ann F. (Butler) Connors and resided in St. John and Petersville, New Brunswick. She attended local schools there and was a graduate of the St. John Business College.
Mary worked in the Boston area in the early 1950s where she met and married William H. Voorhees of Bath. Mary and Bill resided in West Bath until relocating to Florida in 1994. They continued to enjoy summers at their cottage at Quaker Point in West Bath. She was employed by the Kennebec Wharf & Coal Company, as well as the Bath Iron Works from which she retired as an administrative assistant in the Estimating/Contracts Department in 1988.
In retirement in Sun City Center, she enjoyed taking courses at the local community college and volunteering at the South Bay Hospital. She was an active parishioner of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center as well as All Saints Parish (St. Mary’s) in Bath.
She was predeceased by her husband and parents as well as siblings Rita and Gerard Connors of Petersville; J. Arthur, Lewis and Philip Connors of St. John and Charles Connors of Flint, Mich.
She is survived by her son John W. Voorhees of Bath, Maine, as well as sisters Pauline McDade and Eleanor Connors of St. John and Rose McMillan of Toronto, Ontario, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 144 Lincoln St., Bath, Maine, on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary’s name to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, 3121 Hotel Road, P.O.
