SACO — John C. “Jack” Haley Sr., 79, of Buxton Road, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014 at his residence.

He was born in Biddeford Sept. 13, 1935, the son of Gordon and Thelma Romprey Haley.

Jack attended local schools and later graduated from Thornton Academy in 1954.

He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves until 1961.

Working at many of the local garages, Jack then worked for Sylvania GTE until his retirement. After he retired, he opened his own machine shop in Saco, which is now run by his grandson, Daryl.

Jack enjoyed racing, going to fairs, golfing and spending time with his family. He could often be seen on the front porch of his house on the Buxton Road waving to folks as they passed by.

He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by: two sons, John Haley Jr. in 2005 and Joey Haley in 1957.

Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Sylvia Fay Haley of Saco; a daughter, Sonya Booth and her husband John of Saco; a sister, Linda Marie Haley of Saco; eight grandchildren, Richard, John, Travis, Nick, Donna, Daryl, Amanda and Jason; and seven great-grandchildren.

Jack also had several adopted grandchildren, who referred to him as “Grandpa,” Michael, Jimmy, Michelle, Katelyn, Crystal and others.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Road, Hollis. Services will conclude with military honors. Pastor Brian Blair will officiate. Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral and Cremation Services are in charge of the arrangements.
