Aug. 16 and 17

The 89th annual St. Peter’s Italian Bazaar will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 16, and 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 17, with food available at 1 p.m. The church is on Federal Street in Portland, and events begin with a Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday, celebrated by Bishop Robert P. Deeley. A street procession will follow the Mass. Featured at the festival are traditional carnival games, food, live music and the famous “greased pole,” with a $300 prize for making it to the top.

Charity Omartian has been selected to be the permanent pastor at the Congregational Church of Wells. Omartian, of Hollis, New Hampshire, has a degree in vocal music performance from Hiram College and a master of divinity degree from Methodist Theological School in Ohio. She also studied clinical pastoral education at the Cleveland, Ohio, Clinic and worked at Ohio churches. Omartian has also served as staff chaplain at Lowell, Massachusetts, General Hospital and as palliative care chaplain resident at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. While in Ohio, she met her husband, Jim, and they now have two children, ages 5 and 2. The family will live in Wells.
