FHS class of ’84 sets reunion

On Saturday, Aug. 23, members of Freeport High School’s class of 1984 will gather for a reunion at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport. Happy hour will be from 5-6 p.m. with light hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be served from 6-8 p.m. There will be a cash bar and music.

Upstairs at Azure meets Aug. 6

Upstairs at Azure, a soiree for writers and poets, will hold its third monthly meeting Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m., at Azure Cafe? in Freeport. The group meets to give writers a forum to share their work, fiction, poetry or non-fiction in an intimate group.

Upstairs at Azure takes its name from the space provided by Jonas Werner, owner of Azure Cafe ? and also a poet. Azure will also be providing wine and snacks. Membership is free, but a $5 contribution is suggested for each meeting.

Writers and poets, published or unpublished, are invited to join the group and can call 272-3641 or email Gar Roper at all4OMNI@aol.com. The total enrollment will be limited to assure that all attendees get to participate. Writers may invite critique of particular aspects of their work, but in general, the group is intended for support and appreciation, not literary criticism.

Chamber revises

tag sale plans

Previously scheduled for Aug. 9, the tag sale planned by the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce will instead be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St., and it will be a Holiday Market. Shoppers will find a potpourri of treasures, baked and homemade goods, collectibles and furniture.

Writer-raconteur coming to library

Freeport Community Library will host Maine journalist, novelist and raconteur Crash Barry Friday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. Barry is on a summer Maine library tour to promote his latest book, “Marijuana Valley.” He is also the author of the novel, “Sex, Drugs and Blueberries”; a memoir, “Tough Island,” and a newspaper column, One Maniac’s Meat.

According to the “Marijuana Valley” website, the book “is the true story of a free-loving (and smoking) fringe community growing Maine’s most valuable crop.” Copies of “Marijuana Valley” and Barry’s other books will be available for purchase and signing. Spay clinic hits milestone, has

Community Spay-Neuter Clinic, which recently neutered its 15,000th pet since opening in November 2010 in Freeport, plans to spay/neuter 50 pit bull terrier-type dogs for residents of Maine and beyond for a special $20 rate, which includes a free dog nail trim, during PetSmart Charities® annual “Primp Your Pit” campaign. Arts, crafts on

The First Parish Church Congregational will hold an Arts and Crafts Market on the front lawn of the church, 40 Main St., Freeport, every second and last Saturday of the month through October, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The dates are Aug. 9 and 30, Sept. 13 and 27, Oct. 11 and 25. Beans at First Parish

A baked bean and pasta supper will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 5-6 p.m., at First Parish Church Congregational, 40 Main St. On the menu will be three kinds baked beans, macaroni and cheese, American chop suey, hot dogs, rolls, pickles, cole slaw, homemade pies, beverages and more. The cost of adults is $8, and for children, $4. Proceeds support outreach programs.

Soccer registration starts

Freeport’s Recreation and Community Education soccer programs will begin in early September. Final registration for the grades 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 soccer league is Aug. 13. Registrations will only be accepted after this date if there is space on a team. If the enrollment numbers do not support gender-specific teams, then the teams will be co-ed.

The grade 5-6 soccer league registration deadline is Aug. 13. This league has been developed to accommodate fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls who are too old for rec. soccer but don’t want the commitment of “travel soccer.” Games will be played in area towns with limited traveling required. Teams will play one game per weekend on Saturdays. A schedule will be available in early September. Registrations will only be accepted after this date if there is space on a team.

The registration deadline for Little Falcons Soccer, ages 3-5, is Aug. 29. This program has limited space and fills fast.

speak Aug. 11

Vaughn C. Hardacker, author of the thriller, “Sniper,” will give a book talk/signing on Monday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m., at Freeport Community Library. In the novel, homicide detective Mike Houston and his partner are sent to investigate when a lethal sniper kills four people on Boston Common. Hardacker is a U.S. Marine veteran and a member of the New England Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. His short stories have been published in several anthologies. He resides in the Maine town of Stockholm.

Copies of “Sniper” will be available to purchase during the event.
