The Community Club invites residents to stop by and see the dramatic improvements they have made to this historic building so far with the help of community volunteers and donated resources, and shop for great bargains and unusual treasures. The North Pownal Community Club building started out as a general store in 1826 and has served in that capacity for most of its life until it was purchased by the newly formed North Pownal Community Club in 1941 and has served as a social center and a meeting place for numerous organizations since then. A year ago, with a new surge of energy, the Community Club took on the ambitious goal of renovating and preserving the building, which suffered from years of deferred maintenance. They have patched and painted some sections of the exterior, while other sections required new sills, windows and major reconstruction. There have also been interior upgrades and painting. The back of the building still needs to be repaired. Volunteers have generously donated some 450 hours to the preservation effort during the last year. The work so far has been funded by donations from members and community friends with an interest in preserving this important piece of Pownal’s history.
In addition to donations to the yard sale, the club welcomes cash donations of any size to help with the preservation effort. They may be sent to North Pownal Community Club, c/o Alan Bradstreet, president, 856 Lawrence Road, Pownal, ME 04069.
