KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Odessa Ann Nason Szumita, 75, of 123 Castle Court, passed away at her residence Tuesday, July 1, 2014 after a long illness.

She was born in Portland, Maine on Jan. 23, 1939, the daughter of the late Lester and Odessa Smart Nason.

She lived in Kings Mountain for the past 10 years after moving from Biddeford, Maine.

She was a 1957 graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.

During high school, she worked for the First National Market, and at A&P as a meat wrapper, later working for Shape, working her way up to a position in supervision. She retired in 1992 due to illness of COPD and emphysema.

She enjoyed sewing, doing crafts, writing poetry and taking care of her granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her son, Keith Walter Szumita; two brothers, Lester and Raymond Nason; and two sisters, Leona Thibeau and Priscilla Larkin.

She is survived by: her husband of 56 years, Walter J. Szumita of the home; three daughters, Holly Jefferies and Callie Szumita, both of New York, and Diane Moment of Florida; one son, John L. Szumita of Maine; one sister, Linda Bowman of Maine; and two grandchildren, Danielle Szumita of Maine and Cody Germain of New York.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Rebecca Love and the staff at Hospice of Cleveland County, and Dr. Stephen Grenton and staff for all the care and support during her difficult times.
