Join Helene McGlauflin and other students for a series of free Wednesday morning classes at Patten Free Library on July 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 10- 11am. Participants are welcome to come to any or all sessions. No experience necessary. Class size is limited to 15; to register, contact Leslie Mortimer at lmortimer@ patten.lib.me.us or 443-5141 x25.
Mindfulness meditation is the practice of sitting quietly for periods of time and paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally (Jon Kabat Zinn). It is a simple practice that is easy to learn. The physical and psychological benefits of mindfulness meditation are becoming well established: It reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, produces relaxation in body and mind, and fosters clarity of mind and optimism.
Each session will offer participants:
*the chance to learn more about mindfulness meditation: its effects on the brain, its benefits and challenges.
*the specifics of sitting: how to sit, where to sit, when to practice
*short periods of meditation
*the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the practice
Helene McGlauflin is a counselor, writer and yoga teacher. She has been practicing meditation, yoga and other contemplative arts for 20 years, and teaching them to children and adults for 8 years.
