He was born in Lisbon Falls July 13, 1924, and raised on Orr’s Island, the son of Charles Sr. and Maude Doughty Gilliam. He married Carolyn McEachern Dec. 4, 1992. He was a 50-year member of the Masons.
The sea and music defined his life. His first musical appearance was at the age of 4, playing the ukulele at the Bailey Island Library. While stationed in Hawaii with the U.S. Navy during World War II, he performed his music for WKGU, Honolulu. After his military service, he returned to Orr’s Island where he continued his love affair with the water, making his living as a sardine fisherman, until his retirement in 2001.
Through his life he had several bands, and many fans. One of his hits, “Casco Bay” is still requested on local country stations, and in its day had spent five weeks at the top of the charts of Our Country, Northern New England.
He is predeceased by two sisters, Doris E. Neil and Juliette Alexander.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Brunswick; a son, Ron C. Gilliam and wife Darlene of Earlton, Fla.; two daughters, Becky J. Gilliam of Tampa, Fla., and C. Norma Gilliam Anderson of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Clark Lovejoy and husband Pete of Old Orchard Beach; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
