CAPE PORPOISE — Ruth Carter Persson, 69, of Cape Porpoise, died early Sunday morning, June 22, 2014 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
She was born in Bridgeport, Conn. on Feb. 9, 1945, a daughter of Fred and Lois (Edwards) Carter.
She grew up in Stratford, Conn., graduating from Stratford High School, and went on to college, eventually earning her master’s degree.
Ruth moved to Maine in 1979, where she was employed as a nurse practitioner, working first for Maine Medical Center in Portland, and then for Dr. Jonathan Shill in Kennebunk. These were just her off-season jobs; in the summers, for more than 35 years, she owned and operated the Captain’s Restaurant in Cape Porpoise, where she did all the baking from scratch. For the last 10 years, she served as school nurse at Biddeford Middle School.
Ruth was an adventurer. A member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, she loved hiking, cross-country skiing, show shoeing and kayaking. Spending time at her camp in Kingfield was her passion. She also fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting Alaska; she drove there and back all by herself.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Carter Alvord.
Survivors include: her daughter, Lisa P. Martin and husband Eric of Hampden; two sons, Eric B. Persson and wife Robyn of Bowdoinham and Lance E. Persson of Kennebunkport; her sister, Judith L. Carter of Milford, Conn.; and five grandchildren, Dylan, Cassandra, Matthew, Erica and Hunter.
There are no calling hours. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Church on the Cape, 3 Langsford Road, Cape Porpoise. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s name are encouraged to: Biddeford Middle School, 25 Tiger Drive, Biddeford, ME 04005. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. www.bibberfuneral.com.
